Psalm 1:1-6;
2Cor.6:14-18
You can
easily know what God thinks of you. What God thinks of you is very important
because God’s opinion supersedes the opinion of man. How can you know what God
thinks of you? You can know what God thinks of you by reading psalm 1:1-6.
“Blessed
is the man That walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor
standeth in the way of sinners, Nor sitteth in the seat of the
scornful. But his delight is
in the law of the Lord; And in his
law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree
planted by the rivers of water, That bringeth forth his fruit in his
season; His leaf also shall not wither; And whatsoever he doeth shall
prosper. The ungodly are not so: But are like the chaff which
the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: But the way of the ungodly shall
perish.” (Psalm
1:1–6, KJV)
From the
psalm we are told who the blessed person is and what he does not do (Psalm 1:1).
You can call this negative purity. Then in (Psalm 1:2) we are told what he does.
You can call this positive purity. After this it clearly tells us what
blessings are in store for the righteous, and finally what the end of the
unrighteous shall be.
1.
What
The Blessed Person Does not Do (Psalm 1:1)
Blessed is
the man…what we are being shown here is what makes a person blessed, what
blessing involves in contrast with the world’s definition of blessings. Three negatives
are used here:
Walketh Not: what does this mean? (Gen.5:24; 6:9;
Lev.26:40; Psalm 128:1). When you walk in the counsel of the ungodly, you are
walking contrary to God’s ways. Walking with God means walking in the path of
righteousness. That is what brings blessing.
Standeth Not: When you stand you look, you see, you
ask questions, you observe. Standing in the way of sinners involves observing
their sinful behaviour, copying what they do, accepting their sinful ways
(Jer.6:16).
Seateth Not: He finds no joy in the scorning of
scorners. When you seat with sinners now you have joined their ranks. You are
now planning with them, agreeing to their wicked counsel (Ezek.11:1-2)
Listen to God’s counsel from (2Cor.6:14-18). If you want to
be among the blessed, listen to God, repent and come out from among unbelievers.
Come out of the life of sin. Repent and turn to Jesus.
2.
What
The Blessed Man Does (Psalm 1:2; 119:1-3)
Delights in the Law of God. The righteous enjoys company with
God’s word, God’s people. God’s word is his companion. God’s word is his guide
and his counsellor. God’s word is his light.
Meditates in the Law day and night. For him every word of God counts.
Every commandment is important. Every instruction is heeded. Every miracle is
an encouragement.
Becoming a
blessed person is not only about what you do not do, for that alone cannot make
you righteous. What about what you do? By their fruit you shall know them (Mat.7:15-20;
Eph.2:10).
3.
What
Blessings Await The Righteous Person (Psalm1:3)
He is
like a tree planted by the rivers of water. Charles Spurgeon listed this as rivers of pardon,
rivers of grace, rivers of promise, and i may add rivers of blessing. He will have patience in the time of suffering, he faith in the
time of trial and holy joy in the hour of prosperity. The righteous person
shall flourish like the palm tree (Psalm 92:12-15). He will have all round
fruitfulness. Fruitfulness is an essential quality of a righteous man.
Whatsoever
he does shall prosper.
This is an amazing promise. It is as deep and as wide as Jesus saying to us “And
whatsoever you shall ask in my name that will I do that the father may be glorified
in the Son (John 14:12-14). And why not? Such a Christian is a follower of
Jesus, doing what Jesus did and even greater works.
The righteous
have an imperishable inheritance in heaven lasting throughout eternity (1Peter
1:3-5). The righteous saint has the privilege of being a holy priest unto God
(1Peter 2:5, 9). But the ungodly are not so. The wicked are not so.
4.
What
The End Of The Wicked Shall Be (Psalm 1:4-6)
The wicked are like chaff. They will be blown away in the
negative sense (Psalm 103:15-16). Though wicked may prosper, it is for him to
be destroyed in the end. They cannot
stand God’s righteous judgement. I remind you of the story of the rich man and
the beggar Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31). May I also remind you of the parable of the
rich fool (Luke 12:16-21). The wicked must face the righteous judgement of God
unless they repent.
The expectation
of the wicked shall perish, but the Lord will preserve the righteous in
eternity! as we await the coming 2014 determine to seek after and follow after righteousness and the blessing of God will follow you.
